We play for something greater than medals.
The Long Game is a high-performance infrastructure system, ensuring the capability developed in sport is not lost, but reinvested into our workforce and communities.
New Zealand is leaking elite leadership talent at the exact time our workforce is struggling with resilience, adaptability, and leadership capability.
We are a structured athlete transition platform, built so no athlete walks into life after sport alone and no high-performance capability goes to waste.
Through practical support, trusted relationships, and real-world pathways, we help athletes transition into meaningful careers and leadership roles.
The Long Game is a capability retention and leadership development platform built for Aotearoa, New Zealand.
There is not currently an effective, all-in-one support platform and programme helping athletes prepare for and transition out of high-performance sport. Too many are left to navigate identity shift, career uncertainty, financial pressure, and life after sport alone.
There is a huge amount of untapped talent and transferable capability coming out of sport, but no clear way for employers to identify, access, and connect with these athletes. Leadership, resilience, adaptability, and discipline are being overlooked at the exact time the workforce needs them most.
The Long Game gives athletes one trusted place for transition support - combining practical guidance, real relationships, structured development, and meaningful career pathways in a system built around what comes next.
The Long Game creates a clearer bridge between high-performance athletes and forward-thinking organisations, helping employers access people with proven capability who can strengthen teams, culture, and leadership outcomes.
We support athletes before, during, and after transition through practical tools, trusted relationships, and real-world pathways. That means helping them build clarity, confidence, direction, and momentum into careers and leadership beyond sport.
We work with organisations to surface athlete capability, create talent pathways, and connect employers with people who already know how to perform under pressure, adapt quickly, and lead by example.
No athlete should walk into life after sport alone. The Long Game exists to make transition more supported, more intentional, and more empowering.
No high-performance capability should go to waste. The Long Game reinvests what sport develops back into our workforce and communities, building stronger leaders and stronger organisations across Aotearoa.
"Sport gave me direction. The idea of life after sport feels exciting because I can pursue another dream. With a transition program like The Long Game, I believe athletes will be empowered."
"The Long Game can be a safety net for athletes transitioning out of high-performance sport, but I think that it can be more than that... It would be so valuable to athletes utilising their unique skills gained through HP sport to enhance communities and the workforce."
"With a program like The Long Game, I believe athletes will worry less about their futures and be excited to move into their next chapter in life. Knowing what the next is going to look like before finishing their career will give peace of mind when the time comes to move into the next chapter. The Long Game will change the stereotypical play until your body can't take it anymore and instead will give the athletes the opportunity to finish when they want, on their own terms."
"With The Long Game, I believe athletes will feel confident that there is more than being an athlete and there are plenty of valuable lessons learnt from sport to succeed in what comes next."
"Having a structured programme to support athletes would be great. It would help where the path forward may seem uncertain while also allowing athletes to understand the range of options available to them."
"The idea of life after sport feels scary because so much of who you are is wrapped up in performance, routine and pursuit of an easily defined goal that suddenly stops. With a transition program like The Long Game, I believe athletes will move from surviving the end of sport to stepping into what is next with clarity, confidence and a genuine sense of purpose."
"With a transition programme like The Long Game, I believe athletes will gain more levers to pull and a broader network of people outside the sporting arena to bounce ideas off and chat to on an exploratory, no pressure basis. I see the wider support structure building confidence, create options, and ultimately empower athletes to feel like they have more ownership of their next chapter, whatever that may look like."
"A transition programme like The Long Game would help athletes step away at the right time, rather than hanging on too long and burning out. It normalises how tough that shift can be, and more importantly, it offers real support through the process, and benefits organisations too. Athletes bring a work ethic and life skills you simply can't learn in a classroom".
